Smokey and the Fire

Jordan Mill was a 12-year-old girl that had the best grades in her class. Jordan’s Dad and Mom worked at home on the farm. When Jordan came home from school, her parents would put her straight to work. Sometimes Jordan wished she lived in a wealthy house in the city, but she knew that the only way to live was country style.

“JORDAN?!” yelled her mother. “GO MILK THE COWS…NOW!”

As quick as lightning, Jordan rushed out the door and into the barn. Halfway through her job, Smokey, her black lab, barked and barked furiously. “Coming, boy!” she shouted. When Jordan walked out of the barn, she saw fire throughout the fields.

“It must have started by someone throwing a cigarette butt out of the car window,” Jordan thought to herself. In the field of fire she could see Smokey was trapped, enclosed by a ring of fire. Jordan rushed to the house, dodging the fire.

“Mom! Dad!” said Jordan, out of breath. “There’s a fire in the field, and Smokey’s trapped!”

Jordan’s mom almost had a heart attack when she saw the fields.

“I’ll call the fire department!” said Dad. Then far of in the distance you could see bright red fire trucks passing one vehicle after another. Suddenly there was a horrifying yelp.

“Smokey!” Jordan said, frightened. SPLOOSH! A wave of water streamed out from a fire hose. Jordan saw one of the firefighters carry Smokey out of the bursting flames. She ran out to see if Smokey was okay.

“Is Smokey going to make it?” she asked nervously.

The firefighter shook his head. “He might not, but we’ll see what the vet can do.”

Jordan broke out in tears and ran back to the house. About three hours later the fire was put out. The next day, Jordan got a phone call from the vet clinic.

“Hello?” said Jordan.

A woman came on the line. “This is the vet clinic telling you that your dog, Smokey, has survived the fire.”

Jordan felt a burst of happiness fill her body. The woman continued.

“Smokey will be waiting–,” but before the woman could finish her sentence Jordan hung up and ran to tell her mom and dad about the great news. After lunch, the Mill family went to pick up Smokey. As soon as Jordan saw Smokey, she ran and gave him a huge hug.

Jordan thought to herself, “This is one thing I will NEVER forget in my life.

WOW Blaire! Thanks so much for sharing your fantastic writing ability with all of us! Your story was so expressive and full of details, I could almost feel the heat from the fire. I really like that your story had a happy outcome, and felt that the irony of Jordan’s dog being named Smokey, was VERY creative. Please keep writing, and sharing!
